Netflix Ruined My Patience, and I'm Not Even Sorry

Remember when we used to wait an entire week for the next episode of our favorite TV show?

Because apparently I don't have that kind of patience anymore. 😂

Growing up, you actually had to be home when your show came on. Missed an episode? Well, that sucked for you. There wasn't a little button to push so you could pick up where you left off. You waited for a rerun, asked somebody what happened, or just stayed confused until the next week.

 And somehow we survived.

Even into the 2000s, we wereill scheduling our evenings around television. Now I get irritated because I have to wait seven whole days to find out what happens next st.

 Streaming has completely ruined me.

I've become one of those people who says, "Just one more episode," at 11 p.m. and suddenly it's 2 in the morning. I have work tomorrow, I know damn well I'm going to regret it, and yet there I sit with the remote.

Let's Talk About What I'm Watching

First up, The Diplomat.

I'm only on season one, so if you know what happens later, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF.

I started watching because I love Keri Russell. I've loved her since Felicity, and I'm always happy to find her in something good.

I'm really enjoying the show, but can we talk about her husband, Hal?

That man drives me absolutely nuts.

Every time I think maybe he's going to behave himself, here he comes doing something else. Sir, can you PLEASE just sit down somewhere and let your wife do her job?

I'm going to keep watching, obviously. But that doesn't mean I won't be yelling at my television.

Then there's Fire Country.

I love this show. I love Bode, I love the characters, and I love the storyline.

But here's the problem.

I'M CAUGHT UP.

Do you know how irritating that is for someone who likes to watch six episodes in one sitting?

Now I'm stuck waiting every week like it's 1997 again. No thanks.

And then there's Best Medicine.

I really enjoyed this one! It's funny, but there's also an actual storyline to get invested in. That's my favorite combination.

Give me something that makes me laugh, but also makes me care about the people.

Not everything I watch has to be dark, dramatic, or involve somebody getting murdered. Although, let's be realistic. I do enjoy a good murder documentary. 😂

And Another Thing — Stop Canceling Shows!

Can we talk about how these streaming services get you completely invested in a show and then decide they're done with it?

 Excuse me?

You can't leave me sitting there with 47 unanswered questions and then just cancel the damn thing.

I have invested HOURS of my life into these people.

I know their problems. I'm worried about their relationships.

I need to know who did what and why.

And you just expect me to move on?

Absolutely not. At least give us a proper ending.

One final episode. A little wrap-up. SOMETHING.

WE'RE JUST NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED?!

And don't even get me started on waiting a YEAR, sometimes longer, for another season.

By the time it finally comes back, I barely remember what happened.

So what do I do?

Go back and watch half the last season again.

At least when you're going to cancel something, give us an ending! I don't even care if it's a special episode.

Just don't leave everybody hanging like that.

I Miss Old TV. Sort Of.

There is something nostalgic about the way we used to watch television .

Everybody watching the same shows, talking about what happened the next day, and waiting to see what was coming next. There was something fun about that.

But here's the thing.

I don't want to actually GO BACK to watching that way. 😂

Waiting for the season finale. Actually having to pay attention because you couldn't just rewind whenever you wanted.

I miss that part. What I don't miss is the waiting.

Streaming spoiled me. I like being able to watch what I want, when I want, and however many episodes I feel like watching. 3

I want my old-school television nostalgia with my modern-day binge-watching privileges.

Is that really too much to ask?

Give me my couch, a blanket, something to snack on, and an entire season of something good.

Because once I'm home and comfortable, and that bra comes off,

you better have a damn good reason for expecting me to leave the house again.

I've got important things to do.

Like watch six episodes of a show and pretend I have absolutely no responsibilities tomorrow.

Now tell me: are you a binge-watcher, or are you one of those people who somehow still has the patience to wait a week between episodes?

And what's everybody watching right now?

Because apparently I need something else to get hooked on.

— Off the Record, where the topics change and apparently so does my bedtime.
